We work through these units as a class activity where my students are in Literature Circle groups. They will read and complete activities both in small groups and whole class in order to gain a greater understanding of the material being covered in class. These books, being realistic fiction, give them a sense of what it was like to be alive during that particular time in history. They have completed a couple of Literature Circles this year with books I had purchased, and showed so much enthusiasm that I had to find a way to try to bring more of this type of instruction into my classroom.
