My Project
My students are struggling readers in a small, rural community. Close to 50 percent of the children in our school are from low-income families. Students at our school are taught phonics skills in a systematic, explicit way, using the principles of the Science of Reading. One such principle is that beginning readers learn best when given decodable books (books with words the students can sound out).
Our older struggling readers need "high-interest" decodables (books which have illustrations and storylines that are better suited to their age group than most easy books, which are geared to younger children).
We are trying to build a small library of phonics readers that will keep older struggling readers turning the pages and practicing their growing skills. Reading this type of book is often the highlight of the students' day. These books build their confidence because the children can read them. Practicing with decodable high-interest books helps make these students more successful readers.
