An all-time favorite activity in our 2nd grade classroom is daily reading! It's the time of the day when I see my students the most relaxed!
My students come from all sorts of backgrounds and over 70% of them receive free lunch, but I make absolutely no excuses for them!
It is important to instill the love of reading in ALL of my students. Every day is a new day to learn and grow in my classroom!
I am in need of quality, nonfiction books in my second grade classroom, but most specifically at the HIGHER READING LEVEL. These books would be used during our independent reading time and free reading. They would also be given an opportunity to check books out to take home, which they love to do! My elementary is a low-income school where there is a high need for students to take books home to improve their reading.
Books are a wonderful glimpse into a world my students have not yet heard or experienced!
My Project
Classroom teachers frequently forget the high readers. They are very independent and follow instructions so well. Often these kinds of readers are forgotten when it comes to purchasing books for a classroom library. They just want an engaging challenge, too, when it comes to independent reading time! This non-fiction BOOK SET would benefit my higher readers, who have challenged themselves all year and now find themselves struggling to find appealing books at their level.
This project would strive to meet two major needs--higher-level non-fiction books for the top readers, and more high-quality texts in our classroom library!
This project would provide all my students, more specifically the "high-flyers", to feel engaged in their daily independent reading.
