My Students

My students cover a wide depth of knowledge and a broad range of abilities. They are students with disabilities and a desire to succeed. Many of them are reticent about reading, so making reading exciting and relevant and accessible makes a positive difference in their interest level and progress.

Finding contemporary works to speak to core concepts of coming of age and social justice adds representation, authenticity, and connection for our exploration of literature.

This emotional novel has it all.

My Project

Our district curriculum addresses coming of age and social justice concepts. The Hate U Give speaks to both of those topics as the main character, Starr, witnesses the death of a friend as well as the struggles of her family, her neighborhood, and her own journey to understanding.

Representation of races that are similar to and different from our own experiences connects us to personal and social issues on a deeper level.

This novel will create an opportunity for my students to reach out and connect to characters who they may identify with while also reflecting on their own roles in social justice.
