Our district curriculum addresses coming of age and social justice concepts. The Hate U Give speaks to both of those topics as the main character, Starr, witnesses the death of a friend as well as the struggles of her family, her neighborhood, and her own journey to understanding. Representation of races that are similar to and different from our own experiences connects us to personal and social issues on a deeper level. This novel will create an opportunity for my students to reach out and connect to characters who they may identify with while also reflecting on their own roles in social justice.
