My Students

When asked what my biggest fear is, only one answer comes to mind. I am afraid that I will leave this world without making a significant impact on the lives of others. Thankfully, teaching has afforded me the opportunity to make an impact and change the lives of my students everyday.

Pick any movie that revolves around a fictitious high school and you will have an idea of the type of real students who walk through my door.

Many of these high school teen movies are filled with cliquey cliche scenarios, and rightfully so. They are cliche because they are true, the stereotypes exist in these high school movies because they are modeled after real students with real problems. The difference in my students and those who grace the halls of Beverly Hill's 90210 is about $80,000 a year. We live in a community who has an average household income that is at America's poverty line. Many of these students will never cross our county line or venture into another state. Our school district operates on the state required minimum tax levy allowed and a majority of the staff works out of 45 year old buildings. As a district we do the best we can with what we have. In recent years our test scores are on the rise and we have received recognition for our performances from the state.

My Project

For this project my students will read Lord of the Flies and see the transformation that occurs on the island. We will look though the pages and find the themes we can relate to our Government class. The themes we can discuss vary from anarchy and order, rules, power, and compromise.

Literacy is an issue that is currently plaguing the United States and should be addressed by all teachers at all levels.

Reading this classic novel will be a way to leave the traditional teaching landscape behind us and delve into a world outside of our textbooks all the while combating literacy.
