The Great Pencil Challenge!

My Students

I teach second grade at a Title I school in Michigan. My students are always so excited to learn new things. My goal is to provide them with multiple ways to learn and show their learning. This year, my students have a wide range of abilities and instructional needs. I need ways to help best reach them as learners.

My students are a fantastic group of kids who enjoy learning.

I am on a mission to pass on my love of learning to my students. My classroom is a haven for them. I want to provide many fun and engaging learning opportunities for them, along with a comforting environment.

My Project

Some common phrases that I have heard in my classroom is, "I don't have a pencil" or "my pencil needs to be sharpened." It seems like we are always sharpening or replacing pencils despite having systems set up where students can swap out their pencil for a sharpened one. Pencils always seem to disappear. We use pencils for all subjects including math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. Students must also take a pencil with them to art class.

This school year, I will be starting the great pencil challenge in order to instill a sense of ownership with my students for their pencils.

Each student will receive a pouch at the beginning of the school year including 5 sharpened pencils and eraser. At the end of the week, I will collect them in order to sharpen them. Students will earn a prize if they have all 5 pencils by the end of the school week. Special pencils, such as the neon pencils, will be used for special events. I can't wait for my students to challenge themselves with managing their pencils and see how many pencils we can save this year.
