My Project

My students are learning that art materials don’t always have to come from a store. With this project, we will collect discarded paper from our school, including old worksheets, construction paper scraps, and even pieces left behind from previous art projects, and give them an entirely new life. Students will tear, soak, blend, and transform this “trash” into pulp, then use screens and traditional papermaking techniques to pull their own sheets of handmade paper. We’ll experiment with color, texture, natural materials, and fibers before using our finished paper to create new works of art. This project gives students the chance to experience the entire creative cycle, from something headed for the trash can to a beautiful material they made themselves. Along the way, they’ll learn about sustainability, recycling, experimentation, and the wonderful possibilities that can come from looking at ordinary materials differently.
