Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Students in the library are discovering a variety of concepts that are of interest to them. Computers are always available, but they know nothing about how they work. I'd like to provide materials that will help them discover the value of a computer beyond searching for and finding information.

About 70% of students at my school are on free and reduced breakfast/lunch.

Students are eager to learn but often don't have advantages at home that many of us take for granted. Computers with Internet connections are a great example. Computer work frequently must be done at school where we have the equipment and other technologies. We also have a small hearing impaired population who love working on computes. Our student turnover rate is relatively low which allows for us to get to know students over the years.

My Project

When a student comes to the library, he has a choice of stations. Computers are one of those station choices. Students have shown an interest in understanding computers and how they work, but we haven't had any resources to support this discovery. The books requested will help students learn about computers in general, and provide information about different kinds of coding. The coding will help the students use basic skills from their classrooms to create computer programming that they can use and share with their classmates.

We currently have six up-to-date books that are computer/Internet specific with no books on coding.

We had more materials, but they were written when computers were a new technology. These are no longer appropriate. The requested books will provide students with current technological information. The coding books will help students develop technology skills beyond what they use on a regular basis. These enhanced skills may help change their views of what they can accomplish in the future.
