Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love our our students because they are beautiful, funny, insightful, diverse and resilient. Although they have many reasons to feel overwhelmed, sad and afraid, they come to school eager to learn, laugh and succeed. Helping them process their big feelings is an important part of their school day.

As the school based counselor, I work with children who have experienced the death of parents, homelessness and foster placement.

I also work with children that are experiencing anxiety, domestic violence, and divorce. The items I am requesting will show our students that we value and care about them. By creating a safe, comfortable place for them to share their feelings, I can show them ways to express their fears and frustrations in healthy ways so that they can feel heard and connect with others who can help meet their needs.

Currently, because of lack of space, I see students in an office that looks and feels like a conference room for adults. The carpet, bean bags, and canopy will help create a space just for them and make them feel like, we do indeed, care about their feelings. The puppets will be used by the students to reenact situations or feelings they are not ready to share as their own. The canopy will be used for children who need some quiet time away from the classroom. By reducing outside stimulus, the canopy and bean bags can really help deescalate big feelings. The carpet will be a perfect place to do social-emotional group work.
