This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Although deemed a low-performing traditional Title 1 School in North Carolina, the students in our school reside in a very diverse area. In the surrounding neighboods, citizens work hard and desire to have a well-rounded educational experience for their children, as most people do. With a new principal and administrative staff selected to lead our school this year, the surrounding community, our staff and students are excited about the efforts to reclaim positive academic outcomes for all are under way.
My Project
These materials make a difference in the lives of students who may have a strong desire to read classic and/or contemporary literature, but don’t have access to book stores or community libraries. At our Title 1 school, there has been a limited collection of books for our advanced learners in the library. However, under the leadership of a new principal, the spirit of reading to become smarter has been rekindled. Every morning our principal encourages all students to read a book, as our library continues to be restocked. The books for my classroom library will provide the gift of more opportunities for high-interest reading at school and home.
