Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at an inner city school in East Oakland called RISE Commmunity School. Our population is 65% Latino and 35% African American. The neighborhood is riddled with crime, drugs, and soaring murder rates. It is in this volatile environment that we are trying to provide the gift of language to English Language Learners and low-income students. I am a multiple subject teacher to 19 students who have entered my classroom with little or no cultural capital. It is my vision to make learning accesible and fun for each student. The majority of my students receive little or no help at home to support that which we do at school. Therefore, I am seeking a Literacy Take-Home Pack set for my classroom. The literacy-building backpacks contain books, activity cards, manipulatives, and puzzles. The topics are meant to generate interest, ranging from themes on friendship, sea life, pets, sports, wild animals, space, and dinosaurs. Two of those subjects, insects and dinosaurs, will be covered in our classroom explorations over the winter and spring semesters. The take-home packs (16 in all) would be available on a check-out basis so each student could take a pack home, return it, and check out another. The packs encourage parent-child interaction and enable the student to feel successful. This confidence is important as many of them struggle with homework and with English. Finally, the packs would remain in my classroom available to next year's students. I have goals for my student from Yemen who speaks almost no English, my student from Cambodia who is slowly progressing in reading, and my many students from Mexico who need the extra opportunities in developing their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. In this context, I am requesting assistance providing literacy sets my students can take home, use, and return. For 3/4 of my students, I am their only source of English. I wish to be able to provide the extra support they desperately need and to equip them with the gift of langugae.
