This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are recently-arrived immigrants and refugees, coming from more than 35 nations and speaking over 32 languages. Many of them have fled ethnic persecution, dire poverty, or war to find a better life here in Oakland, CA. The large majority of our students (95%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Many struggle with the after-effects of trauma they experienced before, during, and after the immigration process. They are resilient, kind, hard-working, and funny. Our school district currently finds itself struggling with the effects of painful budget cuts. We are making it through with generous support and positive energy from people like you.

My Project

This will be a fun project where students from my class and my partner's class will create architectural models based on geometry. We will research different architects around the world - analyze styles, influences, deconstruct the art, identifying psychological content found in the symbols and images and their relationship to industry and society. We will create plans for, and models of architectural structures that reflect our own personal and cultural values, symbols, and representations, utilizing critical thinking to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, and demonstrating creativity and innovation. We will apply the technical architectural skills of drafting and designing, and construction in addition to applying their academic knowledge of geometry (area, perimeter, scale factor, 2D and 3D, measurement, modeling, congruence, similarity).
