Dr. Bethel from Fort Washington MD is requesting lab equipment through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students hands on experience with biotechnology. We recently received a two week loaner kit and had to return it. Having these items in our classroom will enhance my Genetics and Organic Chemistry course experiences.

My students are excited about STEM and are looking for experiences in and out of the classroom to develop their interests. They are our next generation scientists and engineers. We need them to be ready. They approach the content with a high level of background knowledge and require technology to keep them engaged. As a molecular biologist I realize the importance of exposing students to biotechnology tools early and often.
I want to be in a position to give my diverse population of students the best STEM experience as possible, because I had so many wonderful teachers who were able to do it for me.
My students need resources and it will take a community of help to make that happen.
Students will carry out some of the experiments done daily in a research lab using molecular biology techniques that are highly relevant in our world today. The Covid-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of genetic testing and DNA analysis. If granted the requested materials, my Science and Technology Program scholars will be better prepared to go into research and medical fields, armed with the fundamental understanding of how biotechnology impacts our lives. In addition we will participate in the Genes in Space competition from MiniPCR bio. These materials will help students design experiments that may win a ticket to space! As a former cancer biologist turned STEM teacher/ enthusiast, I know the importance for students of color to have access to high level science professionals and lab materials in high school.
