Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I Pre-K through 5th grade elementary school and all students receive free breakfast and lunch. All twenty-one of my kindergarten students arrive at school every day excited and ready to learn, even though many of them may have walked some distance to get to school. Most of my students are English Language Learners (15) and very eager to learn English. The students in this class work hard every day and have bonded to form a caring family despite any disadvantages they may face.
Some of our favorite things to do every day are to read, write, and play educational games with friends!
We are the "Kindergarten Scholars" because we are a group of students who learn and grow together. Our motto is "Awesome starts here!" These Kindergarten Scholars certainly live up to that motto. They make me happy and proud every day to be their teacher!
My Project
The Kindergarten Scholars crave hands-on materials to reinforce their learning, but we do not have many available to us. Research shows that the brain loves color. Colorful educational materials increase engagement and learning, so I print hands-on math and reading center materials for my students in color and on cardstock to create fun, engaging activities. I also print reading and other curriculum materials in color or on colored paper to add interest and further engage students. We do not have a color printer available to us at our school, so most of the color printing is done at my home.
My students would also love to be able to print color pictures of themselves completing activities in our classroom and pictures of their work to take home and share with their families.
This will help build culture and relationships within our school and classroom community and will help our families feel connected to what their children do at school. Students beam with pride when they can share their school day with their families!
