The Future is Upon Us

My students need multiple copies of 5 science fiction books that have a similar post-apocalyptic theme for book club discussion groups.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever read a book that you just couldn't stop thinking about? Such was the case when I devoured Cormac McCarthy’s post-apocalyptic novel The Road. My students were so curious about it that I read it aloud to them, and it sparked several intense discussions about the future.

Seventh graders at my inner city school are very curious about the future, whether it is depicted positively or negatively in books, movies or video games.

McCarthy's ashen world in which cannibalism prevails, all forms of plant and animal life have been decimated, and laws are no longer obeyed was riveting to the adolescents I teach. Throughout the hopelessness of the world described by McCarthy, an unnamed man and his son remain "good guys" and their love for each other transcends the amorality others have succumbed to.

My Project

Therefore, I would like to take our read-aloud to another level this school year by incorporating small book discussion groups. With this project that I am requesting, small groups of students would be able to read and discuss several other post-apocalyptic novels, including The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The Dead and Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer, and Messenger by Lois Lowry. Ideally, students will make connections to The Road, write and illustrate responses, and post comments about the books on our class website message board. Small groups also enhance social skills and promote a lifelong love of reading.

Your donation will allow my students to experience a thematic unit about the future.

As you know, children are the future of this world, and through literature they can better prepare themselves for what is to come. Please provide the sets of books that will guarantee many hours of thoughtful reading, reflection, and discussion.
