The FORTify Project

Help me give my students bean bag chairs, floor lamps, power strips, an oil diffuser, essential oils, ceiling hooks, rope, beads, and a desk mirror.

My Project

My students see the mental health needs in their school, and they are looking for solutions! So, they asked the question, "how can we use math to create a space on campus that supports our well-being?" They called to mind the blanket forts they'd built as kids and how those made them feel safe. So, they thought, "how can we make a permanent fort here at school?" And I said, "I think math may help with that."

Now it's time to build that safe space on campus--will you help us get the materials we need to build both the interior & exterior of our wellness fort?

After analyzing wellness data, students used geometric design thinking (surface area, volume, perimeter, trig, optimization) to create prototypes, vision boards, & pricing plans that FORTify well-being. They took in input from professionals in wellness, architecture, interior design, and business. They then pitched their fort idea to a professional panel of judges, & landed on a winning design.

Now, students will hone skills in project management, real-life trigonometry and geometry through construction, and making cost-benefit decisions while managing a budget. They will use the requested bean bag chairs, floor lamps, power strips, an oil diffuser, essential oils, ceiling hooks, rope, beads, and a desk mirror to build this safe space on campus. From start to finish, it's been their vision--want to be a part of the change that helps them execute it?
