My Students

I have taught mild/moderate English, History, and Math for thirteen years in junior high. I am moving to high school and will teach tenth and eleventh grade English, but also a SPED World History class. This class is a survey course with a focus on reading. I’ll know about half of my students because there are two junior high schools that feed into my new high school. My theme for eighth grade English was “empathy” so, I know those kids have read the novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird" and watched the movies "To Kill a Mockingbird," "Prisoner B-3087", and "The Outsiders." I have ideas for the novels I will use. One is new and not in the school yet. I also try to buy books from my budget so the students can keep them for their own library if they want.

My Project

I am back to teaching World History to SPED tenth graders. The class is Mild/Moderate, so the emphasis is on reading skills. I have a History BA so I actually try and teach what the other World History teachers teach their kids. I would like to show them something other than WWII literature. I want them to have their own copies. "The Things They Carried" is a novel most kids wouldn’t read until college, and I haven’t taught it before, so it would be a new and invigorating exercise for all of us.
