This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My high school students are, on average, 4 years below grade level in reading and 5 years below grade level in writing. I teach 9th grade English, 12th grade English, and Ethnic Literature. My students are high-need and at-risk; 100% of them are on free or reduced lunch.
Many of my students have never read a book straight through from beginning to end. The school district has provided me with less than a class set of textbooks that are on a much higher reading level than my students can understand. My classroom is in desperate need of supplies that are engaging and accessible to the students.
For most, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian" will be the first book that they have read from beginning to end. This will empower them and prepare them for the rigors of college, which is their ultimate educational goal.
Your help will allow students to see their potential and discover the pride in themselves that comes with finishing and connecting to a book!
