We are using the \"A Fall Garden Learning Experience: Sowing Knowledge, Reaping Joy\" project to bridge the gap between nature and life skills. When the materials first arrived, the students couldn't wait, and talked consistently about building the garden. While it was delayed until the Spring, each student was excited to have a role in the setting up and planting of the lettuce and tomatoes. \r\n\r\nA specific highlight occurred a nonverbal student was able to use problem solving to remove the plastic off the garden lights independently and set it up with minimal prompting when the students first started the project. Students learned about determining which measurement was appropriate, inches or centimeters through discussion and used rulers to measure the height of our lettuce sprouts and tomato plants, recording the data in their garden journals. We will use simple addition to see how many total centimeters our \"salad-to-be\" had grown since the previous week. It isn't just a math lesson; it is a celebration of life!\r\nThere was a beautiful sense of calm and focus as they worked with their hands to settle the plants into their new homes.\r\n\r\nThe next phase of our project moves from the soil to the kitchen, where we will apply four-operation math to meal preparation:\r\nAddition & Subtraction: Students will count the number of tomato slices or lettuce leaves needed for the whole class, practicing subtraction as we \"take away\" ingredients to build each sandwich.\r\nMultiplication: We will practice simple grouping—if every sandwich needs 2 slices of tomato and we are making 5 sandwiches; how many slices do we need in total?\r\nDivision (Sharing): We will practice \"fair sharing\" by dividing our harvest into equal portions so that every student gets a taste of the joy they","fullyFundedDate":1758202871513,"projectUrl":"project/a-fall-garden-learning-experience-sowin/9545102/","projectTitle":"A Fall Garden Learning Experience: Sowing Knowledge, Reaping Joy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Meives","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9679176"},{"teacherId":7257049,"projectId":9979850,"letterContent":"I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your generous support of my classroom.
