The Fight for Social Justice Begins in the Classroom

Help me give my students current graphic novels around the march on Selma that are not only engaging, but require high level critical thinking around social justice in our language arts classes.

My Students

Our students are faced with a much harder landscape to navigate than even fifteen years ago. They come to school hungry for a safe environment that nurtures their creativity while learning how to navigate a world that can seem chaotic and uncaring.

My students are curious, bright, and kind; they are hungry for novels that not only speak to them, but help guide them.

They know that their diversity is their strength, and that their voices can be used for good.

My Project

will use the the graphic novel March by John Lewis in order to stir conversations around social justice and equity in America. The civil rights movement is a compelling part of our history to examine as part of our curriculum because it is as relevant in 2019 as it was in 1964.

Many students take their civil rights for granted and as a result are not as fully engaged in the current events of our times as they should be.

They need to understand the hardships that were endured in order to promote a new and energized conversation around race and gender issues in the United States.

I love teaching our students because their voices matter. When they understand the power of an individual voice in our collective history they are more likely to use their own for positive social change.
