This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are taking part in a new genetics elective course offered at our school. Throughout the course, they have shown a curiosity in science that needs to be developed with hands-on activities.
Our school is found in the heart of West Baltimore.
In a city that has experienced many ups and downs, my students always find a way to make it to school and show an interest in their learning. Their perseverance is admirable and they deserve the very best education has to offer.
My Project
The richest learning experiences come from those where we actually touch and create. Being able to manipulate something, watch it grow and analyze it live changes the learning process.
My students are beginning to study heredity in our genetics course.
As they study traits, we are learning how traits are passed from parent to offspring. Being able to participate in a hands-on project where they grow their own fruit flies to observe live traits would make for a deeper learning experience. Students will observe live fruit flies, analyze their traits, and observe as they create new generations of flies to analyze.
The fruit fly kit would provide materials for not only this year's students but for future years.
