Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are recent immigrants to the United States, many trying to escape poverty and violence in their home countries. They are learning English and have a lot of hope to be successful and impact the world!
They are hardworking and courageously adjusting to new life in a new country, in a new city, in a new school.
They are COLLEGE BOUND, but will face a lot of adversity in doing so, including learning a new language, navigating new school systems and routines, and finding financial means. Their unique and powerful perspectives will make them the leaders we need in the United States to make this country a better, more inclusive community.
The school community is incredibly diverse and focused on inclusion and success for all students, including the unique newcomer population. These students are incredibly determined, passionate, and inspiring humans that keep me showing up each day!
My Project
I am trying to build up a class set of iPads that can be used in the math department. We use iPads as graphing calculators, as translators, as dictionaries, and as tutors.
The students in my math support class are working with a math program that requires each of them to have access to a device so that they can get individualized support.
The students in my Algebra class use the iPads as calculators, translators, and for doing their online homework in the afterschool program. I have just purchased five more with the math department budget, which was all the money we had left, but I have eight tables in my classroom. I plan on purchasing as many as the budget allows each year and am slowly but surely building up to a class set so that at the very least, students can work in pairs and interact with the device.
Help us get enough iPads so that each group in my 32 student class can have access to a translator and graphing calculator, without me needing to give up both my personal iPad, laptop and desktop computer to make the interaction with technology possible.
