The Digital Story of Their Lives

My students need five iPads to give all students the opportunity to write and publish the stories of their lives using actual pictures and images along with their own masterpieces.

My Students

Our classroom is filled with 23 energetic first grade bodies that are eager to read and write everyday. We are a neighborhood, K-5 school on the outskirts of St. Paul, Minnesota.

My diverse group of knowledge seekers have inquisitive minds, positive attitudes, stories they want to share, and a desire to learn.

These creative first graders love to tell the stories of their lives and adventures. Writing these stories can be very challenging to many students who are just starting to learn to write. These twenty-first century learners don't have access to devices that provide them with a variety of ways to tell their stories digitally. Each student has a story to tell, so let's give them the chance to share it.

My Project

These iPads along with the Book Creator app will allow all first graders to publish their own stories or books using their own words or voice along with pictures that they have taken or images they are unable to draw themselves. We will use these across the curriculum. They will create a memory book of our school year, by writing or recording about one or two activities that we did in our class along with pictures, images, or drawing that they individually get to include in their book. These memory books will be shared electronically with their families. In addition, these iPads will be used daily to publish works throughout the year not just in literacy. In science, we will create a book about the life cycle of a chicken hatched in our classroom. Again they will be able to share these digital books the kids have created.

Authentic learning will be happening as our students get to transform writing from publishing a story on a piece of paper to creating their own digital story using both written and spoken words along with actually pictures of themselves or images that they would be unable to produce as first graders.

For the student who struggles with writing, we will able to meet the student where their learning is at by providing differentiated opportunities to write and publish. This opportunity is priceless. Motivation will increase as students are engaged in their writing on the iPads. This also gives our students online access to learn about new concepts that they are interested in and they can publish a book on this learning about using the online materials and images. Having access to five iPads in our classroom gives more students an opportunity to publish and write more books throughout the year.
