This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As an Earth Science teacher, I believe this subject matter is uniquely suited to help students connect with STEM concepts which they previously had been adverse to. Most of my students have placed into this class due to struggles with a freshman year science or math class. The challenge I face as their teacher is to assist their development as students engaged in inquiry where they may not have much previous success to draw from. My first semester at this school has been very gratifying, witnessing so many students engage with material, struggle at points, persevere when necessary, and ultimately experience success.

I would like to undertake the Earthquake Resistant Structure project to connect my students to active scientific concepts and engineering solutions which are present in their lives.

The school's location in Hayward, CA is a few hundred feet from the Hayward Fault. This is among the most active fault segments in the San Andreas Fault Zone and is in close proximity to millions of people and their important infrastructure. This environment demands the construction of buildings which can withstand the forces generated by an earthquake on the Hayward Fault or any other local fault segment.

My students will explore historical principles of building construction and incorporate formal engineering solutions into the design of a 3-story earthquake resistant structure. Designs will undergo a second draft following peer critique. Then students will use real materials to construct a 3 story model which will be tested for stability on an Earthquake Shake Platform. After failure of their structure due to increased stress applied through the shake platform, Students will conduct a final redesign with attention to their model's specific failure point.
