This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a regional marine-themed science and technology high-school in Bridgeport, CT. Our student population is unique in that half of our students come from our city and the other half come from 6 surrounding districts, bringing urban and suburban students together in hands-on, project-based learning in the science classroom. Our Medical Veterinary Technology Class studies diagnostic medicine and prepares for careers in the clinical laboratory and the medical field. Our curriculum includes units in phlebotomy, hematology, serology, microbiology, blood bank and clinical chemistry, which includes looking at laboratory results as a means of diagnosis.

My Project

All of the Medical Veterinary Students at our school have aspirations to one day work in the medical field. The medical veterinary technology course focuses primarily on the clinical laboratory and the use of blood work results as a diagnostic tool. Whether becoming a medical technologist, nurse, physicians assistant, medical doctor or veterinarian, each of my students will need to be able to interpret laboratory results in order to be successful at his or her job. Your Blood Never Lies: How to Read a Blood Test for a Longer, Healthier Life, is a valuable resource that explains the information behind each test value, making it understandable and accessible to the high-school student.
