My Students
I teach in a small, rural community in Central California. My students are hungry for learning experiences that challenge them in new ways and help them see the world outside of our town. I try my best to do this is my World History classes by searching for new ways to teach my students the skills they need and to help them see the past as dynamic and relevant. This coming spring when we embark on our unit on Medieval Europe, I hope to make that happen by having my kiddos create illuminated manuscripts.
This hands-on activity will make history come alive!
We'll banish the textbook and power down the laptops as we prepare our parchment and stitch together out folios, then letter, illustrate, and illuminate our way through the "Dark Ages."
My Project
With these materials, my students will create faux Medieval manuscripts. They'll dye the paper with coffee to simulate parchment, stitch their folios together with upholstery needles and embroidery thread, then draw and illuminate a coat of arms for the cover using the markers and gold leaf.
As we learn about the social, political, religious, and cultural history of Europe and how it was interconnected with the rest of the Medieval World, our classroom will become a scriptorium.
Students will add notes, maps, and other assignments to their manuscripts, and will illustrate and illuminate the pages in the style of Medieval scribes. When we reach the end of the unit, each student will have not just a collection of what they have learned, but a work of art.
