My Students

I teach an energetic, enthusiastic class of fifth graders! My students are learning two languages, English and Portuguese. They work hard to master what they’re taught and love to learn. They adore social studies! They’re always excited to learn about U.S. history, which is integrated with my ELA content. This helps to connect social studies to their other favorite subject: reading! They enjoy independent reading, and I love to introduce them to books that present perspectives, experiences, or ideas that they otherwise wouldn’t encounter. My class is also a bit of a chatty bunch! Because of this, they excel in collaborative learning and group projects. Classroom discussions are a must, and we’ve learned so much from opportunities to talk about our learning and figure things out together.

These three things–a love of reading, social studies, and collaboration–are what we’re working to integrate this year, so that we can learn each of those three skills to our fullest potential.

Our class works hard to make the most of our learning time and experiences. These students always try their best and bring their all to everything we do.

My Project

My class is a group that loves and benefits from collaborative learning. However, due to many COVID-19 protocols, much of my classroom has become devoted to keeping students apart. I'm hoping to change that!

These materials will give my students the space, materials, and resources to work together as they learn more about the people and world around them.

Comfortable furniture (rather than the floor) and clipboards to write on will increase our productivity and learning. New books in our class library that students have requested and that are geared toward teaching students about other people, places, and things in the world will help us as we learn and improve our reading skills.

These things will help my students to become closer as a class and learn valuable social skills like working in a group and having a positive discussion. Books that place an emphasis on empathy and open-mindedness will help them to be come better citizens and friends to those around them.
