This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The challenge for my students is to learn about financial investments by participating in a stock market contest. Students work with partners to purchase virtual stocks and track their progress over a ten week period. The winning firm has the greatest increase in its portfolio.

My 12th grade students are a diverse group from many different backgrounds and of varying talents and interests.

Since economic literacy is extremely important, I believe that a stock market simulation is a helpful and interesting way to have them practice their critical thinking and mathematical skills. It is important for them to be able to access real time data to keep track of their stocks. Some of my students will attend four year universities; many more of them will attend community colleges; and, of course, some will join the business world. Regardless, all of them must become more aware of their financial potential.

My Project

Having enough Internet access in my classroom will allow my student investment firms to monitor, modify, and evaluate their stocks. Currently, there is only one computer in the classroom. It is important for them to be able to check their progress during the hours that the New York Stock Exchange is open which in Los Angeles is 6:30 to 12:30. Please, help my students get tablets in order to monitor their stock portfolios for their financial advisory projects.

I have been implementing this investment portfolio project for many years.

Most of my students enjoy learning about the stock market and, of course, most want to "win" and become the financial advisor for the class--and have a pizza party! It is evident that financial literacy is an essential skill to have in our increasingly complicated world.
