I teach a community-based class of 23 students with significant disabilities. We spend half of the day on academics and the other half on life/job skills. Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are allowed to go off campus to work at different job sites in our community. Ninth grade students remain on campus and work on job skills at school.
My students have abilities!
Every student is capable of contributing to our school and our community in their own individual ways. When they are at school, they work hard on their academics and their life/job skills training. When they are out working in the community, they make their teachers, their school, and their community proud. They create relationships that lead to future employment.
Through job skills training we learn so much about our students. We find talents that they never knew they had. They become interested in future jobs.
My Project
A frozen drink machine would add more job skills training opportunities to our existing Classroom Cafe. We use our cafe for job skills training for students with significant disabilities. The frozen drink machine will be used to make frozen coffee drinks. We would add frappes to our current warm drink menu.
Adding more choices to our classroom cafe menu will challenge the students to build upon the job skills that have already been mastered.
These skills can transfer to future employment opportunities. Students will learn how to write down orders. They will work on creating beverages while following kitchen safety rules. The students will use map skills to make their deliveries on the school campus. They will be able to interact with peers and school personnel.
