Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are at an age when the choices they make are becoming more important, but they are also beginning to understand that life is rarely as simple as right and wrong. Sometimes people make bad decisions for understandable reasons. Sometimes doing what feels right for someone you love can still have consequences. Those complicated questions are exactly what make House Arrest such a powerful story for middle school readers.

This project will provide 20 copies of K A Holt's House Arrest, a novel in verse about twelve-year-old Timothy, who is sentenced to a year of house arrest after committing a crime while trying to help his struggling family.

Through Timothy's story, my students will explore choices, consequences, poverty, family responsibility, anger, loyalty, and what it means to take responsibility for our actions. Most importantly, they will have opportunities to discuss a character who cannot easily be divided into simply "good" or "bad."

The novel-in-verse format also makes this story approachable for developing and reluctant readers. Students can experience a complete, emotionally complex novel without being overwhelmed by dense pages of text. As we read together, I want my students to ask questions, challenge Timothy's decisions, empathize with circumstances different from their own, and consider what they might have done in his place. House Arrest gives us a story worth reading and, just as importantly, choices worth talking about.
