My students need a humidity pump, pine bedding, and a cage liner, to have a successful hatch with fewer eggs incubating!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These students are an amazing group! They have grown together as collaborators over the past three quarters, cooperating to solve problems or teach each other an academic concept. They have built up those independence muscles, from using dictionaries to look up words to maintaining our classroom's supplies, appearance, and calendars.
If ever there was a class ready for project-based learning, it's this one!
The children demonstrate every day that they have the confidence and capability to tackle learning through a whole-group, multi-week, multidisciplinary project. They have taken all the baby steps. Now, they're ready to take on the big picture.
My Project
We are jumping into project-based learning for our final quarter together. The Chick Project, which involves incubating, hatching, and caring for chickens, will provide the students with an immersive learning experience. They will consume media about chickens. They will write about chickens. Chicken math, chicken science, and chicken social studies are coming to our class!
Raising chickens is an intense and engaging learning experience.
It also requires some investment. Past donors have funded the incubator, candler, and panels. This year, I would like to add a humidity control to increase the success rate of the hatch as I decrease the number of eggs we are incubating. 13 chicks in one classroom is too many!
The humidity control, panels, pebbles, and chicken wire are permanent materials. The pine shavings, cage liners, and chick feed are consumable materials. The veterinary care and long term home for the animals used in the project are a responsibility that I take on as the teacher.
