My Students

If you took any type of life science class in high school, you may remember dissecting various specimens, such as a frog, earthworm, or starfish, in order to fully understand their anatomy. Most students look forward to these dissections and consider it a highlight of the class.

I teach Human Anatomy and Physiology to seniors in a Title I, public school in Georgia.

These students are wonderful young people with a desire to learn as much as possible about the human body. Many of them register for the course because they intend to pursue a career in the health sciences after graduation from high school. They believe that taking this course will give them a solid foundation in anatomy and physiology and will benefit them once they take the same course in a post-secondary school.

My Project

I am requesting the purchase of preserved cats for dissection in my human anatomy class. After we have studied the major systems of the human body, my students will prepare for this dissection by completing a virtual cat dissection online. For some students, dissecting a cat is very personal and gradually introducing the lab to them in this manner seems to reduce any anxiety they may have. After being exposed to the activity virtually, they will be given the actual dissection procedures and complete a pre-lab that further prepares them. After the pre-lab is evaluated, the day finally arrives and each group receives a cat. The first day is designed to get accustomed to the cat and to study external features. Over the next four or five days, the students make the incisions and begin the process of investigating the internal organs. The last day is designated for clean-up and appropriate disposal of the cat.

I firmly believe that this dissection is unique to this course and is, by far, the best illustration of comparative anatomy to a human body.

Normally, the cost of the cats is covered by funds available to our science department. However, rising costs and budget cuts have prohibited the purchase of the cats. By supporting this project, you will provide students with a foundation that will increase their chance of success in a college anatomy class, as well as enhance the learning environment.
