The Case of Reading Without Books

My students need books! They are avid readers and don't have enough books to support their growth as readers. They will need books for ELA and their Independent Reading period.

My Students

My students are lively and eager to learn. They come into class and are dedicated writers and readers. In all my classes there is a shared love of writing and reading. They have stories to tell, and stories to read. You will most likely find them on the floor reading a book, pushes themselves to write amazing narratives, or helping out each other in the classroom.

Getting an education is important to my students and their families,I have students who commute from all over the city (even New Jersey) every morning and make it to school on time.

My school is in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn with a high needs population. I am impressed on a daily basis by my students and want to ensure that they can receive the best quality education.

My Project

The books I am requesting are for independent reading. Every morning my students have 40 minutes of independent reading. I have a small selection of books and they are eating them up!

Working in a high needs community I understand the need for students to have access to books.

I need to add more books into my library to account for different reading levels and my ENL students. There will be a double emphasis on independent reading in our next ELA unit (late October) where students will be adding on another layer of independent reading. I need to make sure my students have a variety of books to read!

The books I currently have don't reflect the wide variety of needs of my students. I am requesting books that appeal to ENL students, reluctant readers, students with low reading skills, and my gifted and talented group. These books will help students build their reading stamina and also allow them to feel more in control since they will be able to pick books that they are interested in. I know that having a wider selection of books will improve my classroom and student enrichment.
