Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am requesting clay and paint to create more butterflies so the whole fifth grade can participate. Currently I only have 30 butterflies and we have over 100 students in fifth grade. The materials will help create a space for reflection and understanding, where students can connect emotionally to the stories of children who perished. These art supplies are for students to create their own butterflies to honor the children and historical texts. These items will facilitate an immersive learning experience. By creating a mural with the butterflies, students will better grasp the human cost of this atrocity, fostering empathy and respect for the victims.

The primary goal of this project is to help students understand the profound impact of the Holocaust, especially on children, and to instill a sense of responsibility to prevent such atrocities in the future.

Through engaging in the Butterfly Project, I hope students will:

Deepen their understanding of history by learning about the Holocaust in a personal, relatable way. Foster empathy by memorializing the children who died and reflecting on their potential and lost lives.

Cultivate respect and tolerance by discussing the importance of human rights and the consequences of hate. Build a lasting memory by contributing to a memorial that honors the lives of the children who were lost.

What makes your students special?

My students come from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, and many may not have had the opportunity to learn about the Holocaust in depth before. What makes them special is their capacity for empathy, creativity, and their desire to engage with meaningful projects that make a difference. Their work in this project will not only honor the memory of the children who died but also help ensure that such horrors are never forgotten.
