The Brew Crew is a coffee shop that the students run with guided assistance. This STEM project is geared towards helping students strengthen their academic mathematics and technology skills. I teach a self-contained ESE class of about 40 students with various intellectual disabilities. The students with intellectual disabilities in my classroom are in grades 9-12 (ages 14-22). I am teaching my students skills to help them be employable and able to work and function in the real world. Real world application helps the students gain and retain important job-related skills and learn financial literacy skills.
The mission statement of the Brew Crew is to provide high quality service with delicious, made-to-order coffee for the faculty and students to enjoy and to provide students with life skills education and entrepreneurial skills training opportunities.
My students are developing their academic skills by using various strategies to run their curriculum-based enterprise within the current school year. They have learned how to fulfill the orders effectively by using functional mathematics skills to discover concrete solutions. They have learned organization skills to create, label, and fulfill the orders. They have learned how to setup the work stations to improve the efficiency and quality of our product.
The coffee donated will be used to supply our curriculum-based business. The goal of this project is for students will be able to develop the necessary skills needed when transitioning to the workforce and develop their academic skills through using various strategies to run their curriculum-based business within the current school year. Through the individual job responsibilities, each student is able gain experience and knowledge based on carrying out the needs of the business. Through receiving additional resources, the business can continue to grow and most of all our students will grow also. Therefore, your donation will improve student learning and achievement by helping create a bridge between the workforce and secondary education.
