This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend Yokomi Elementary, a magnet school in Fresno Unified School District with a science and technology focus. Many students come from the downtown neighborhood, and many come from other parts of town because they like our science programs and curriculum. One thing unique about our school is that we have dedicated science classrooms equipped for hands-on science instruction every day. Students engage in life, earth and physical science as they strive to be independent learners and critical thinkers.

Our students stand out because they are both resilient and strong!

They have overcome many challenges and continue to persevere and stay motivated in school. The reason why I want to earn this grant is for them to have more opportunities to work in teams and engage in project-based learning. This grant for Breakout boxes will give them additional opportunities to be creative and problem solve at the highest level. I believe in them and know they can go far in this life!

My Project

The Breakout Challenge is a learning game platform that turns the classroom into a place where students use teamwork and critical thinking to solve a series of challenging puzzles in order to open the locked box. The terrific thing about this game is it can be used more than once and the challenging puzzles can change according to the curriculum. I can use the game as the culminating assessment for the end of a unit on life science, earth science or physical science. The game is a terrific way to engage students and have them critically think and solve problems while competing against other students. It is time sensitive, exciting and challenging. Students will need to work well together as a group and collaborate. Students will recall prior knowledge to solve each riddle or question, and this will internalize their learning. Each clue opens one of the boxes until they reach the final lockbox for the prize.
