Help me give my students a french horn to allow my young brass players branch out. Most kids and parents wouldn't think of trying this instrument until they heard its gorgeous sound and its blend with the band.

My Project

Most beginning band students don't know how beautiful the sound of a french horn is -- how can they, if they've never heard it live? I start my beginning brass players on either trumpet or trombone, and our intermediate band develops a more characteristic, well rounded band sound when some students branch out into other instruments. Usually, the way this happens (as it did with my own son) is that I let a student try this instrument (e.g., a french horn, euphonium or tuba) at school and then lend it to the student, who takes it home and falls in love with it!

Without an instrument to lend, I generally have students who are just content to play the instrument they've learned.

This results in having too many of only one kind of instrument (the phrase "trumpet army" comes to mind for many of us band teachers), which can actually lead some students to decreased interest in the class.

With a new horn, I can get some students interested and help them to understand the beauty of a diverse brass section and band as a whole.

Mr. Ellis will only receive his materials if this project is fully funded by June 8.
