This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My precious students come to school hungry. Rushing off the bus to the cafeteria for breakfast, even after having finished breakfast, some turn to me and ask if there is more. Most of them have not eaten since they left our school the night before. Class participation is low because students are hungry. Recently, my students are telling me that they don’t like school lunches and don’t have any food at home to bring in for lunch. We have created a “Hungry Heroes" cabinet in our school. A place where fellow teachers can come to retrieve a pre-made meal, such as Ramen noodles and Mac-n-Cheese cups that require just water to eat, for a student who is in need. We will also include individually wrapped snacks such as goldfish, pretzels, crackers, and juice. Our children will no longer have to feel the empty pit inside their stomachs.
A child's only job is being a child and should never have to worry about being hungry.
The school day is very long for my students. With arrival at nine, lunches starting after twelve, and dismissal at four p.m., the time between meals can be grueling and I imagine most go home to empty refrigerators. School is the only place they can get a hot meal. Having these different kinds of snacks and juice in the classroom will help them stay focused and motivated during the afternoon.
