My students are bright and inquisitive. Many of my students come from military families, as our school is close to the Ft. Bragg Military Base and Pope Air Force Base. Consequently, many of my students already have a deep understanding of sacrifice, service, and patriotism. However, some of my students are also dealing with losing loved ones and constant relocation. While I find that my students are extremely resilient, I continuously seek ways to make sure that each child feels a sense of control, security, and peace in their classroom environment.
It is my goal to keep my students engaged while they are mine to keep and inspire them to learn well after they leave my class.
I want my students to collaborate, communicate, be creative, and think critically.
My Project
As you may have heard, Disney has made a film of the popular book A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. It is my hope that the popularity surrounding this movie will inspire our students to read this book. Many popular childhood books have been made into movies. These movies usually generate millions of child viewers. However, some students do not have the opportunity to read the book before viewing the movie. It is my goal to use the upcoming movie as a way to get students to engage in a novel.
In conjunction with the other ELA teacher on my fourth-grade team, we will lead students through a 3-5 week study of A Wrinkle in Time.
During this study, we will address vocabulary, characters, plot, setting, and writing. Our students will participate in literature circles, in which they will discuss the book at length with other students. Ultimately, all their work will lead up to the students creating a story map and producing a written critique of the novel.
