My Students

I teach 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade Gifted and Talented students at a rural school, southeast of Denver, Colorado, a place where the deer and the antelope roam. Many of my students live on some sort of farm or ranch, with their parents running the property or working as farmhands. While they get plenty of sunshine, fresh air, and exercise - they need to flex their mental muscles as well. Working with these kids is challenging and fun! Their sense of humor and their unique way of looking at the world never cease to amaze me. They are brilliant and creative, as well as being active learners, in and out of their classroom.

My Project

My project, The Book Was Better than the Movie: Change My Mind, is a project that stemmed from conversations I have had with my students - they would tell me about the movie in great detail, but many of them never realized it was based on a book! With the books I have chosen for my Gifted and Talented students in mind, we will be able to read the books, watch the movies or television shows, and then present arguments from both sides in a class discussion of which was better - the book or the movie?

My students will learn how to compare and contrast the movies vs the books and make logical points that are open for discussion.

They will also learn about detail, voice, character analysis, plot devices and overall themes that are found in both types of media. These lessons will be entertaining, thought provoking, and hopefully add some good books to their personal library.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
