Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our seventh and eighth grade students are full of grit and agency! As a project-based learning school, our students build twenty-first century skills through critical thinking, collaboration and oral communication.
On a typical day, you will see our students huddled together discussing, debating, creating, envisioning and being the drivers of their own learning.
Without a doubt, Bulldog Tech students are not afraid to take on challenges and conquer rigorous projects.
At our school, culture is important. Not only do we want our students to engage in rigorous and authentic projects that lead to deeper learning, but we also want them to develop a sense of empathy and social justice.
My Project
In this project, students will participate in a deep dive in which they will research the rich history of MesoAmerica and the role that cocoa has played in shaping modern society and industry. Students will look closely at the complex social structures of the Mayans and the Aztecs and the important role that chocolate played in those societies. Students will then study current events revolving around the ethical dilemmas of the modern chocolate industry, including child slave labor and fair trade chocolate.
The focus of this project is for students to build a sense of empathy and urgency by thinking critically about current conflict that exists in the world today.
At the end of the deep dive, students will host an artisan chocolate exhibition, where they will share their handmade chocolate, showcase their learning and bring awareness to current issues surrounding the chocolate industry.
