Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Enthusiasm is encouraged in or school, and we love how creative and excited our children are when they arrive each day. Our challenge can be getting the children to focus their energies in positive ways.
Our students are children of newer immigrants living on limited incomes, some with special needs, and they are excited to come to school each day.
With all of their enthusiasm, these creative and energetic students sometimes have a hard time controlling their behavior and focusing on the learning that needs to be done. Our school is a nurturing community that welcomes the families of students to many programs designed to help parents help their children. We realize that it does take a village to raise a child, and we work together with families and the community to give these children a strong foundation.
My Project
We are inviting parents to join us for a workshop entitled "The Best Me I Can Be." We have designed a program that will have teachers facilitating work/play stations with parent/student pairs. Each station will address a behavioral issue that young children often have, like listening or sharing. Teachers will read books with the group and then run an activity for the parents and students that will focus on strengthening the behavioral skill. Students will learn rules about sharing, working together, listening, etc., in a fun, interactive, hands-on workshop that allows them to use their energy in a positive way. Their parents will take these ideas home and help their children in their home environment as well.
Being able to focus on work and follow directions will not only give the children a stronger connection to the curriculum and class work, but it will give them a stronger sense of self-control.
With increased focus, they will be better able to attend to lessons and make the most of everything they do.
Having parents involved will make this a learning experience that will connect school and home and make this a life skill that supports the child 24 hours a day, not just during school time.
