My Project

My students are learning to be book lovers! A few of them entered my classroom already loving reading, but most of them have needed some gentle guidance. With a previous DonorsChoose project, I was able to provide some light, fun, quality graphic novels, which got just about everyone reading. Now I feel like my students need a little more meat in their literary diet. My students are ready for some high quality, inspirational children's literature - the kind of books that not only win the awards, but the kind that could also turn them on to reading.

I love when my students find just the right book!

I love when they beg for just a few more minutes of silent reading. I know these books will help feed that passion for reading!

It is exciting to try to keep up with modern children's literature. So much has changed in my 40 years of education! I have followed the Caldecott and Newbery awards for a long time, and I have seen how these award-winners can impact children and turn them into lifelong readers. I have put together a list of children's novels and picture books that, according to the experts, have a legitimate chance of winning awards in late January. I will be excited to share these awesome books with my students!
