The Beginnings Of An iPad Classroom

My students need an iPad to use as presentation tools and as a resource for our online textbook activities.

My Students

The world we live in has become technology driven. Many professionals use and communicate with various forms of technology everyday. An iPad will allow me to utilize additional classroom resources while exposing them to another tool many of them will be required to use in their careers.

My students are 13 and 14 year old eighth graders.

In this eighth grade science class we learn about rocks and minerals, cells and body systems. I see approximately 120 students throughout the day over five class periods. My students have a great range of abilities including those with IEP's and those who are gifted. Many of these are included in the same class periods. Our junior high has seventh and eighth grade with a population of almost 900 students. We have a moderate level of low-income students which has been steadily increasing over the last couple of years.

My Project

It is limitless as to what things can be accomplished in a classroom utilizing popular technology. Students become more engaged and become excited about sharing what they have learned. This is particularly crucial as we try to increase our achievement levels in the areas of science and math. The projector is used on a daily basis and the iPad, with the Splashtop application, would allow me to create a digital and mobile whiteboard allowing me to have more interaction with students rather than standing at the computer to advance slides or toggle between programs. Our textbook we adopted this past year contains a vast amount of resources that can only be found online. Having the iPad would allow me the opportunity to have students who need enrichment or have had extended absences to complete many of these online activities before they move on. It is extremely difficult too assign online material to many students who do not have online access.

Many of these students have access to iPads and iPods at the elementary level.

When they reach the junior high, there is no access to these resources in our classrooms. I want to begin incorporating iPads so my students can continue to have the resources available to them. It will also encourage students to become more engaged in science activities and learning. This generation is one we count on to further our science understanding and discoveries.
