My Students
Art is in a battle in middle school. The kids are given the opportunity to pick their electives but, unfortunately, art is losing. We have hundreds of kids at our school, yet fewer than 40 have chosen art to be their all-year elective. The rest are in the 9-week course.
I think it is EXTREMELY important to allow the kids to experience art.
I want my students to explore different types of mediums. They should be allowed to make up their minds about what kind of art they like. For some of these kids, I only have 9 weeks or less to make that happen. I want to utilize every minute I have with them.
My Project
This is for drawing in charcoal. I will set up a still life for each group. They will learn how to use charcoal to create value and depth. We will understand how to use perspective and the importance of composition. The paper is larger than what they normally are used to drawing on. I believe getting them out of their comfort zone is a good way to teach them how to tackle new issues and problem solve. Charcoal is the gateway to all other mediums. It teaches value, space, and texture, which translates into painting.
