This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach general music in a high poverty inner-city public school in Indiana.

Our school has 650 students in kindergarten through sixth grade who love the arts! They are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. They come to music willing to sing a new song, learn a folk dance, play a rhythm instrument, choreograph movement to a song, play the drums, work on a composer project, and write thank you letters to donors from DonorsChoose! My students know that I have an open-door policy in my room! If I don't have a class, they are always welcome to come hang out! Usually, this means that they are rehearsing choreography for choir, practicing a song or dance, playing the bells, recopying their DonorsChoose thank-you letter, or just letting me know how their day is going! I work hard for them and they work hard for me!

My Project

"Being poor is knowing exactly how much everything costs. Being poor is hoping the toothache goes away. Being poor is a heater in only one room of the house. Being poor is hoping your kids don’t have a growth spurt. Being poor is not enough space for everyone who lives with you. Being poor is your kid’s teacher assuming you don’t have any books in your home. Being poor is people who have never been poor wondering why you choose to be so. Being poor is a box of crayons and a $1 coloring book from a community center Santa...." ~John Scalzi These are my students. Every day I learn more about their struggles, their hardships, and their courage. My heart aches when I hear some of their "stories." I care about every single one of them and hope that I'm able to make them smile at least once during their time with me. I am requesting several life essentials for the neediest students in our school: soap, toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, socks, and First Aid Kits. Just the bare necessities!
