As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Art is such an important aspect to each students education.
I love to see students find art as an avenue to express themselves, also being able to create a project that crosses curriculum has a greater impact on their learning.
My Project
Our fourth grade students are doing a unit on Native American History. I found out they will be talking about Wampum belts. Wampum belts are used to keep record of important stories and ideas. I thought this would be a great opportunity to do a cross curriculum project and have the students create their own Wampum belts. This is a very fun project that I know the kids will love, it also will help reinforce the knowledge they are learning in their core curriculum. I love that the students will be introduced to a culture In a fun way .
