Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids are the best! We have a very average mix of ability levels, but what stands out about our kids is their determination and grit. This tight-knit group of kids is also extremely compassionate and generous.
My students work hard and are eager to be successful in life, despite any personal hardships they may have had to overcome.
Our school population is almost seventy percent economically disadvantaged and almost seventy percent Hispanic. Although our area is technically a suburb of Houston, much of our district is still very rural and the poverty rate is high.
Our school is a unique program in the district and is still pretty new. Students take college classes while still in high school and are able to graduate at the end of four years with an Associate's degree if they work hard. Many of our students are first generation college students, so this is a huge opportunity! We have an extremely limited budget that thankfully provides for the most basic supplies that we need; however, we frequently don't have extra money for enrichment supplies that really help connect the students with the concepts we teach.
My Project
While studying circuits can be fun, I'd like to add a little more STEAM to our learning and turn it into a more creative endeavor! A paper circuit is a functioning electronic circuit built on a paper surface, and projects can range from greeting cards, to origami, to traditional art, such as paintings or drawings. These types of creations are unique because traditional fine art techniques are used to create a circuit that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
I found this really cool Chibitronics circuit stickers set that combines science and art to create simple circuits that work without wires or special paint.
The conductive tape, LED stickers, and batteries included in this set can empower my students to transform classroom knowledge about circuits into meaningful real-world projects.
I'd like to purchase 2 Chibitronics circuit stickers sets for my students to create a STEAM project during our circuit unit in Physics. I know my students will have a blast with these materials and be able to create something cool while learning about electronics!
Last year was tough with Hurricane Harvey and a lot of change, so we're doing everything we can to make our school have the best learning environment possible!
