My Project

The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green is an excellent compilation of personal essays about different facets of human life. Green reviews things like hot-dog eating contests, ancient cave art, and the beauty of sunsets.

I have seen students write pages and pages on a topic they are passionate about, but only a few words when a topic is assigned.

Allowing students to read Green's essays will show them that writing doesn't always have to be stale or boring. I think Green's essays will serve as strong mentor texts for my 11th-grade English students because they are an appropriate length, written in contemporary language (easier to understand!), and are about a wide variety of topics. Ensuring that each student in a given class period has their own copy of this book is important to me because they will have more freedom in choosing what they would like to read.

This school year has been my first year as a teacher, and one of my big goals has been to get all kinds of texts in front of my students. Nonfiction was not a genre we were able to explore this year because I did not have the personal funds to purchase class sets. My students are enrolled in English 11 CP, which means they are in the "regular" English classes. I have heard them mention they feel less important than the "advanced" classes because we have less access to a variety of books. I would love to provide my hardworking 11th graders with copies of The Anthropocene Reviewed while we are studying personal essays.
